Drop AVIF files
Drag your .avif images into the box or click to browse. Several at once is fine.
Set the quality
Quality 92 keeps the detail. Slide it down for a smaller JPG.
Download the JPGs
Click Download on each result. Your files never touch a server.
Why convert AVIF to JPG?
Old apps cannot read AVIF
AVIF is new, so many editors, office tools, and printers still cannot open it. JPG works in all of them.
Easy sharing
Send a JPG and you never have to explain why the other person cannot view your file.
No software to install
Skip the desktop converter. This runs in any recent browser that already decodes AVIF.
Private conversion
Your images are processed on your device and never uploaded unless you click Get URL.
AVIF vs JPG and other formats
AVIF wins on file size but loses on compatibility. Here is how it lines up against the formats you already use, so you can see what you gain and what you give up by converting.
| Format | Typical size | Transparency | Browser support | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AVIF | Smallest | Yes | Modern browsers only | Fast-loading web images |
| JPG | Medium | No | Everywhere | Photos, sharing, uploads |
| PNG | Large | Yes | Everywhere | Graphics, screenshots, logos |
| WebP | Small | Yes | Most browsers | Web images with wide support |
What is AVIF and why convert it?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is built on the AV1 video codec. It packs photos into much smaller files than JPG at the same visual quality, which is why fast websites have started using it. The catch is reach: only fairly recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge decode it, and a lot of desktop apps, printers and older phones still draw a blank. If you downloaded an .avif and nothing will open it, converting to JPG trades a bit of file size for a format everything understands.
AVIF vs JPG: what actually changes
JPG has been around since the early 1990s and is the safest, most compatible photo format there is. AVIF is newer and smarter about compression, so the same picture takes less space. When you convert AVIF to JPG, the image grows a little on disk and picks up JPG's lossy compression, but it gains the ability to open on almost any device. For a photo you need to share or edit today, that swap is usually worth it.
Will I lose quality converting to JPG?
A small amount, yes. JPG is lossy, so re-encoding drops some data the eye rarely notices. At quality 92 a converted photo looks the same as the AVIF in normal viewing; you would need to zoom in hard on fine gradients to spot a difference. The file does grow, since JPG is less efficient than AVIF. If you want the smallest possible JPG, slide the quality down and check the result before you download.
When AVIF to JPG helps
Converting comes up most often when a file simply refuses to cooperate:
Editing in older software
Photoshop versions before 2024, many phone gallery apps, and office tools cannot open .avif. A JPG drops straight in.
Sending to other people
Email a JPG and you skip the 'it won't open on my end' reply. Almost nobody runs into trouble with a plain JPG.
Uploading to forms and sites
Plenty of upload boxes quietly reject .avif. JPG sails through job portals, marketplaces, and older CMS uploads.
FAQ
Convert AVIF to JPG free and online, with no signup and no watermark. Your files stay on your device.
What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is a modern image format that makes very small files at high quality. The trade-off is that older apps often cannot open it yet.
Does converting to JPG lose quality?
A little, since JPG is lossy, but at quality 92 the difference is hard to see. The JPG will be larger than the AVIF.
My AVIF will not convert. Why?
AVIF decoding relies on your browser. Use an up-to-date Chrome, Edge, Safari, or Firefox and it will work.
Can I convert several at once?
Yes. Drop a batch of .avif files and each one converts to JPG in turn, right in your browser.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion is local. Your files only leave the device if you click Get URL to host one.
Is AVIF better than JPG?
For loading a web page, yes - AVIF files are much smaller at the same quality. For compatibility, no - JPG opens on far more devices and apps. Convert to JPG when you need a file that just works everywhere.
Can Windows Photos open AVIF?
Only with an extra codec from the Microsoft Store, and not on every version of Windows. Converting to JPG skips the hassle, since JPG opens in Photos out of the box.
Does the JPG keep transparency?
No. JPG has no transparency channel, so any transparent areas in the AVIF fill with a solid background, usually white. If you need transparency, convert to PNG instead.
Will the JPG be bigger than the original AVIF?
Usually, yes. AVIF compresses more efficiently, so the same picture as a JPG often takes two to five times the space. That extra size is the price of universal compatibility.
Can I get a link to the converted JPG?
Yes. After converting, click Get URL and the JPG is hosted on our CDN with a direct https link you can paste into chat, email or a web page.
