How much each format shrinks

How small a file gets depends on the format you save to and what the picture contains. Photos squeeze far more than flat graphics. Here is roughly what to expect when you re-encode a typical 24-bit source.

How image compression works: lossy vs lossless

Compression makes a file smaller by storing the same picture more efficiently. Lossless methods, like PNG and lossless WebP, rebuild the image pixel for pixel, so nothing is thrown away and the result is identical to the source. They shrink flat graphics well but barely touch detailed photos. Lossy methods, like JPG and lossy WebP, discard data the eye is least likely to notice, mostly subtle color and high-frequency detail. That is why a photo can lose 70 percent of its size and still look the same on screen. The tradeoff is that each lossy save bakes in some loss, so you compress once from the original rather than re-saving over and over.

How small can you go before quality drops

Quality on a JPG or WebP runs from about 30 to 100, and the sweet spot for photos sits around 80 to 85. At that level you usually cut 50 to 70 percent of the size with no difference you can spot at normal viewing distance. Below roughly 60 you start to see blocky patches in skies, halos around hard edges, and smeared fine detail. Flat art with sharp lines and text shows damage sooner, so leave logos and screenshots higher or keep them lossless. The honest way to find your limit is to nudge the slider down, watch the before/after size, and stop the moment the preview looks soft.

JPG vs PNG vs WebP for compression

Pick the format by what the image is. JPG is built for photographs and gets them small, but it cannot hold transparency and it blurs crisp edges and text. PNG is lossless and perfect for screenshots, logos and anything with hard lines or a transparent background, though photos saved as PNG stay heavy. WebP is the flexible middle: it does both lossy and lossless, supports transparency, and usually beats JPG and PNG on size at similar quality. Nearly every current browser reads WebP, so it is a safe default for the web. If you need maximum compatibility with old software, JPG and PNG are still the safest bets.

Will PNG transparency be preserved?

Only if you output PNG or WebP, both of which support transparency. Saving to JPG flattens any transparent areas onto a white background, since JPG has no alpha channel.

Which format should I compress to?

Can I compress large images over 10 MB?
